Catching up again

First the pictures. I know Papa Richard has been missing the pictures of the boys!

Two year olds are So funny! Cam loves to wear the most ridiculous things!

Brendan had an engineering project this week. Taking apart a toaster and discovering how it works. He has yet to reassemble it. Maybe today.

This is the pizza we made last week. See the crust is not the usual texture. Bob's Red Mill GF Pizza Crust Mix

Thursday last week we went to the Omniplex. We LOVE this place.
The boys got to ride a simulator while we were there. They got to fly the Mercury Capsule! Such fun!

This lady was "Ground Control" and talked them through the ride. We got to watch their faces on one of the screens.

Here is the "capsule releasing from the rocket"

And afterwards...

Here's Brendan in the cockpit of an F16

Here's Brendan trying to lift Granny on the pulley chairs

Gears!

Granny & Cameron on the teeter-totter. Brendan & Granny got on it later. Very entertaining!

See Brendan way up at the top?

Brendan LOVES to ride the Segway

I finally got a picture of Brendan holding Taelyn. His nieces sure do love him! Even Cam got a little jealous, I think.

GLUTEN

Well, I am bummed today. I have been SO VERY careful with Cameron and the items he eats. If I have any doubt, I haven't let him have it. I read labels, call companies, Margaret calls companies, I google companies...

But today, something made me read over his multi-vitamin. I know I've read the ingredients before. And, reading them again, they are all okay. Then I read through the nutritional value and I see: WHEAT SPROUTS!!! WHAT??!! You know, you got your vitamin A, vitamin C, Zinc, Potassium, and WHEAT SPROUTS?!

So, I called Rainbow Light and sure enough, they are not gluten free. So, Cameron HAS NOT been gluten free this WHOLE time!!! AGGHHH!!!

Test Kitchen Items

Chebe Bread Sticks
3 Stars
This is a small package of bread stick mix. It was pretty easy to make. The taste was good but the texture was not pleasing to me or Brendan. They were crunchy on the outside and chewy on the inside. The package says "Slightly unusual. Unusually good."

Simply Organic Carrot Cake
5 Stars
I added cream cheese frosting to this and I had to hold the family back from eating all of it tonight! Well, Bren didn't finish his but really, I'm impressed he tried it. I don't think he's had carrot cake before! YUMMO!
5 Stars
This stuff is amazing! So far I have made scones and biscuits with this mix AND I even added it to my Sausage Gravy and it turned out WONDERFUL! It has about 10 recipes on the back: pancakes, waffles, coffee cakes, biscuits, muffins and more. Everything I've made with it is SO yummy! Definitely a new staple in our pantry!

UPPERCASE LIVING

I have had 2 parties so far this year and both have been very successful. I have also had 1 catalog party and 2 pretty good personal orders! Yay!!!

I have another catalog party scheduled and two potential parties to schedule.

This year is starting out great!

Love Dare Finished!

Day 38 - Love fulfills dreams

Delight yourself in the Lord; and He will give you the desires of your heart. ~Psalm 37:4

What is something your spouse would really, really love? And how often do you ask yourself that question?

Common sense tells us we can't give our wife or husband everything they might like. But perhaps you've let "no" become too quick a response. Love sometimes needs to be extravagant. To go all out.

God is our model.

It wasn't when you were behaving like an angel that God chose to pour out His love on you. It wasn't because you were so deserving that He offered you His grace.

God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. ~Romans 5:8

Dreams and desires come in all shapes and sizes. But love takes careful notice of each one.

*Love calls you to listen to what your mate is saying and hoping for
*Love calls you to remember the things that are unique to your relationship, the pleasures and enjoyments that bring a smile to the other's face
*Love calls you to give when it would be a lot more convenient to wait
*Love calls you to daydream about these opportunities so regularly that their desires become yours as well

Dare to think in terms of overwhelming your spouse with love. To surprise them by exceeding all their expectations with your kindness.

TODAY'S DARE

ASK YOURSELF WHAT YOUR MATE WOULD WANT IF IT WAS OBTAINABLE. COMMIT THIS TO PRAYER, AND START MAPPING OUT A PLAN FOR MEETING SOME (IF NOT ALL) OF THEIR DESIRES, TO WHATEVER LEVEL YOU POSSIBLY CAN.

God is able to make all grace about to you. ~2 Corinthians 9:8

Day 39 - Love endures

Love never fails. ~1 Corinthians 13:8

Of all the things love dares to do, this is the ultimate. Though threatened, it keeps pursuing. Though challenged, it keeps moving forward. Though mistreated and rejected, it refuses to give up.

Love never fails.

Never.

Only a few days ago you were Love Dared to build your marriage on the Word of God. That's because when all else fails, the truth of God will still be standing. The unchanging Word of God. No challenge or circumstance can occur that will ever put an expiration date on Him or His love. Therefore, your love - made of the same substance - bears the same, unchanging characteristics.

This is your chance to declare that no matter what imperfections exist - both in you and in your spouse - your love is greater still. No matter what they've done or how often they've done it, you choose to love them anyway. Though you've been far from steady in your treatment of them over the years, your days of being inconsistent in love are over. You accept this one man or woman as God's special gift to you, and you promise to love them until death.

TODAY'S DARE

SPEND TIME IN PERSONAL PRAYER, THEN WRITE A LETTER OF COMMITMENT AND RESOLVE TO YOUR SPOUSE. INCLUDE WHY YOU ARE COMMITTING TO THIS MARRIAGE UNTIL DEATH, AND THAT YOU HAVE PURPOSED TO LOVE THEM NO MATTER WHAT. LEAVE IT IN A PLACE THAT YOUR MATE WILL FIND IT.

He delights in unchanging love. ~Micah 7:18

Day 40 - Love is a covenant

Where you go, I will go, and where you lodge, I will lodge. Your people shall be my people, and your God, my God. ~Ruth 1:16

As you view your marriage relationship from this point on, we challenge you to consider it a covenant instead of a contract.

A contract is usually a written agreement based on distrust, outlining the conditions and consequences if broken.

A covenant is a verbal commitment based on trust, assuring someone that your promise is unconditional and good for life. It is spoken before God out of love for another.

God's Covenants:
Noah-promising never to destroy all flesh with a worldwide flood ~Genesis 9:12-17

Abraham-promising that an entire nation of descendants would come from his family line ~Genesis 17:1-8

Moses-declaring that the people of Israel would be God's permanent possession ~Exodus 19:3-6

David-promising that a ruler would sit on his throne for ever ~2 Samuel 7:7-16

Christ-ultimately, He made a "new covenant" by the blood of Christ, establishing an unending, unchanging legacy of forgiven sins and eternal life for those who believe in Him ~Hebrews 9:15

Never once has God broken any of these covenants.

And then there's marriage - the strongest covenant on earth between two people.

As you've read numerous times, keeping this covenant is not something you can do in your own strength. There's good reason why God was the One who initiated covenants with His people. He alone is able to fulfill the demands on His own promises. But the Spirit of God is within you by virtue of your faith in His Son and the grace bestowed upon you in salvation. That means you now can exercise your role as covenant keeper, no matter what may arise to challenge your faithfulness to it.

TODAY'S DARE

WRITE OUT A RENEWAL OF YOUR VOWS AND PLACE THEM IN YOUR HOME. PERHAPS, IF APPROPRIATE, YOU COULD MAKE ARRANGEMENTS TO FORMALLY RENEW YOUR WEDDING VOWS BEFORE A MINISTER AND WITH FAMILY PRESENT. MAKE IT A LIVING TESTAMENT TO THE VALUE OF MARRIAGE IN GOD'S EYES AND THE HIGH HONOR OF BEING ONE WITH YOUR MATE.

He has remembered His covenant forever. ~Psalm 105:8

Week 2 of our Gluten Free Adventures

Just wanted to share more that we've learned about CD (Celiac Disease) and being GF (gluten-free).

CD is a common (yet often misdiagnosed) genetic intolerance to gluten.

Gluten is a mixture of proteins in wheat, rye and barley. Oats don't have gluten but may be contaminated, so they're forbidden, too.

Triggered by eating gluten, the immune system responds by attaching the gluten molecule, and in so doing, it also attacks your body cells. This is called an autoimmune response. The disease results in damage to the small intestine, which can cause poor absorption of nutrients.

Even the tiniest gluten crumble contains enough of the offending gluten molecule to cause serious trouble and trigger our sensitive immune systems.

And we know how tiny molecules are. And how invisible.

So picture those sticky fingers of family and friends blissfully eating pizza, or dripping sub sandwiches and glazed donuts. Fingers that can easily leave gluten residue on fridge handles, computer key boards, phones...you get the idea. Remember, gluten is a protein– and gluey proteins are next to impossible to eradicate. Because, well, they're sticky. There's a reason that wheat is used in wallpaper paste, adhesives and drywall compound.

--> "Wheat-Free" does NOT mean Gluten-Free
--> Play-Doh has gluten in it!

Incidence of Common Genetic Diseases in the U.S.

Celiac Disease 3 million
Epilepsy 2.7 million
Parkinson's 1 million

One of the most common reasons a product that is technically GF may have trace amounts of gluten is contamination. This can happen in a factory that processes foods that contain gluten. It can occur at the farm, during transportation and milling or on the production line. It can also happen another way. For instance, if you use that jelly or butter for your gluten-infested bread, chances are gluten-infested crumbs will be in your jelly and on your butter.

"Even a few crumbs from gluten-containing breads or crackers can turn your GF food into a toxic treat. When in doubt, leave it out."

Test Kitchen Adventures:

Crunchmaster Multi-Gran Crackers (from Sam's Club!!!)
4 Stars
These rice-sesame seed crackers are yummy. They even have quinoa seeds in them so they have protein AND fiber!

Bob's Red Mill GF Pizza Crust Mix
3 Stars
This is better than not having pizza, but...it doesn't rank high flavor and texture compared to a gluten-infested pizza crust. It does get 1 extra star for being quick & easy though.

Arrowhead Mills Organic Sweetened Rice Flakes

4 Stars
Crunchy flakes. I like that they don't get soggy quick!

Envirokidz Organic Animal Cookies, Vanilla
4 Stars
I would rate 5 but JC wasn't as impressed. Great for nursery and on the go snacks!

Day 37 - Love Agrees in Prayer

If two of you agree on earth about anything that they may ask, it shall be done for them by My Father. ~Matthew 18:19

The unity that grows between a man and woman who regularly pray together forms an intense and powerful connection.

Praying for your spouse leads your heart to care more deeply about them. More importantly, God is pleased when He sees you both humbling yourselves and seeking His face together. His blessing falls on you when you agree in prayer.

TODAY'S DARE

ASK YOUR SPOUSE IF YOU CAN BEGIN PRAYING TOGETHER. TALK ABOUT THE BEST TIME TO DO THIS, WHETHER IT'S IN THE MORNING, YOUR LUNCH HOUR, OR BEFORE BEDTIME. USE THIS TIME TO COMMIT YOUR CONCERNS, DISAGREEMENTS AND NEEDS BEFORE THE LORD. DON'T FORGET TO THANK HIM FOR HIS PROVISION AND BLESSING. EVEN IF YOUR SPOUSE REFUSES TO DO THIS, RESOLVE TO SPEND THIS DAILY TIME IN PRAYER YOURSELF.

In the morning my prayer comes before You. ~Psalm 88:13

Babysitting for the government?

Read this great blog entry about homeschooling:

Day 36 - Love is God's Word

(Back to the Love Dare)

Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path. ~Psalm 119:105

For some people, the Bible seems just too big to understand. It's like an impossible challenge. But as a Christian, we have the Holy Spirit, which is an illuminator of the truth.

For the Spirit searches all things, even the depths of God. ~1 Corinthians 2:10

Because of this, the scriptures are now yours to read, absorb, comprehend and live by. But first you have to commit to do it.

Be in it. Everyday.

With all my heart I have sought you...Your Word I have treasured in my heart, that I may not sin against You. ~Psalm 119:10-11

Stay under it. Be a part of a church where the Word is faithfully taught so you can get a broader, more balanced view of what God is saying through His Word.

Live it.

Prove yourselves doers of the Word, and not merely hearers. ~James 1:22

Everyone who hears these words of Mine and acts on them, may be compared to a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and slammed against that house; and yet it did not fall, for it had been founded on the rock. ~Matthew 7:24-25

Wise couples build their houses on the rock of God's Word.

TODAY'S DARE

COMMIT TO READING THE BIBLE EVERYDAY. FIND A DEVOTIONAL BOOK OR OTHER RESOURCE THAT WILL GIVE YOU SOME GUIDANCE. IF YOUR SPOUSE IS OPEN TO IT, SEE IF THEY WILL COMMIT TO DAILY BIBLE READING WITH YOU. BEGIN SUBMITTING EACH AREA OF YOUR LIFE TO ITS GUIDANCE AND START BUILDING ON THE ROCK.

Whatever was written in earlier times was written for our instruction. ~Romans 15:4

Kudos to Applebee's in Lawton

On our new adventure of gluten-free living, we have new experiences everyday. We learn a bit more everyday. This will be quite a big adjustment to our family in 2009.

We had our first restaurant experience last night at the Applebee's in Lawton. Our kind waiter wasn't sure what, if anything, was gluten-free on their menu so the manager came to speak with us. They have a waitress on staff with a wheat-intolerance, so together they figured out what little Cameron could eat. Salad without dressing, shrimp without seasoning, sliders without dressings and bun and their baked potato with only butter.

Can you believe that their steamed veggies (squash, carrots and broccoli), all their salad dressings, their french fries and mashed potatoes ALL contain gluten?! I think our country is obsessed with gluten!

Anyway, we probably drove our waiter batty but he continued to give us excellent service. Excellent service ANYWHERE is a dying breed, in my opinion. Kudos to Applebee's.

I cleaned out our fridge and freezer on Thursday. French fries, stir-fry veggies, marinades...gluten is hidden in everything it seems.

I also say "Kudos" to Wal-Mart's Great Value brand. All items that are gluten free are clearly marked gluten-free. I like not having to read all the ingredients, trying to remember which ones are good, which ones are bad. I can look for two simple words and be confident in my purchase.

Another interesting find: IHOP puts pancake batter in their omelets to make them fluffier! So, my dear friends and family, this proves you can never, ever assume that something is gluten free because of common sense. It doesn't work in this arena!

Thanks, Barbie, for suggesting the recipezaar.com. I'm off to find what grand recipes I can whip up for my family.

Incredible Pizza & More

These are new photos. They are from January 2nd. But that's how long I've neglected you, my beloved blog.

The Lutz and Uncle Nate and the Clements and Aunt Ginny and kids came to Oklahoma City to hang out at Incredible Pizza. We couldn't have our closest friends in town and not join them!

Brendan & Nate had fun together on many of the games! They were off running with Logan most of the time and didn't stay still for many pictures!

Walker and Cameron shared nicely during Putt-Putt

Cameron really liked the dinosaur and even posed with him.

L-R: Brendan, Barb (her back, anyway), Curry, Logan and I think that's Ginny's kids & then Ginny at the end. It was a long wait for the go-carts but Barb & Ginny had us crackin' up in the stands so it was well worth it. Great show, guys!

Cam & Dad do a little bowling

Walker & Cameron shared a little bit of slushy

More catching up...

While packing up Christmas this year, I wrapped up our Christmas books. We don't have 24 but I wrapped all we have and numbered them backwards starting with 24. Next year, the boys can open one "present" each night as we count up to Christmas! (I think credit for this one goes to Amanda!)

JC made an "astronaut" suit for Cami out of a box

Last but not least, Cameron was working away at his tool bench (sometime in the last week) and made this little gadget. He brought it up to me and said, "I made this for Granny." So, Granny, here's your gadget. It might not be in one piece by the time you're here next.

Gluten Free

It has been a LONG week since I posted last. After the blood work came back we began researching more about Celiac Disease. Here is the basic summary of what Celiac Disease is:

Celiac Disease (CD) is a lifelong, digestive disorder affecting children and adults. When people with CD eat foods that contain gluten, it creates an immune-mediated toxic reaction that causes damage to the small intestine and does not allow food to be properly absorbed. Even small amounts of gluten in foods can affect those with CD and cause health problems. Damage can occur to the small bowel even when there are no symptoms present.

Gluten is the common name for the proteins in specific grains that are harmful to persons with celiac disease. These proteins are found in ALL forms of wheat (including durum, semolina, spelt, kamut, einkorn and faro) and related grains rye, barley and triticale and MUST be eliminated. (http://www.celiac.org/)

There has been SO much for my mind to take in and absorb, think about and digest (sorry for the pun) that I haven't hardly been able to think about anything else. My brain hurts.

After much research and prayer, we have decided to change our family's diet to one that is Gluten Free.

There are several odd things with Celiac Disease. One, there is no standard list of symptoms. Two, small amounts of gluten can "cross-contaminate" and be enough to affect the one with the disease. If you cook gluten and gluten-free in the same kitchen, you are supposed to have separate cooking utensils used only on gluten-free products.

So, we have decided to make this adjustment as a family in hopes of helping Cameron's health.

Over the weekend, I cleaned out our pantry of products containing gluten. I wish I would have taken before and after pictures! I have FIVE bags of groceries that contain gluten. And I haven't tackled the fridge OR freezer yet!!!

Here are just a few of the things that had to go: Tomato soup, cream soups, some brands of peanuts AND peanut butter, crackers, bread crumbs, cereals, pasta, pudding, Nesquik and, one of Cam's staples, Ovaltine.

So, that's what we've been doing this week. And on top of that, I got some type of stomach bug Sunday and I'm just now getting better. I'm still not eating much but I'm getting there.

Hopefully tomorrow I'll begin finishing up the Love Dare and get some pictures of these stinkin' cute boys uploaded!

Cameron's Report

The endocrinologist called me back yesterday with his test results. Here they are:

Growth Scan: Normal

Celiac: Slightly Abnormal, Elevated IgG
(This is where the Internet is EVIL! I looked this up and it says the next step is an intestinal biopsy. This has my stomach all in knots!!!)

CBC: Normal

Comprehensive Metabolic Panel: Normal

Thyroid Test: Normal

Growth Factors: Abnormal; "could be caused by malabsorbtion"

The next step is to see a Gastro-Intestinal Dr. Please keep our little guy in your prayers!

Day 34 & 35

Day 34 - Love Celebrates Godliness

[Love] does not rejoice in unrighteousness, but rejoices with the truth. ~1 Corinthians 13:6

You are one of the most influential people in your spouses life. Have you been using your influence to lead them to honor God, or to dishonor Him?

TODAY'S DARE

FIND A SPECIFIC, RECENT EXAMPLE WHEN YOUR SPOUSE DEMONSTRATED CHRISTIAN CHARACTER IN A NOTICEABLE WAY. VERBALLY COMMEND THEM FOR THIS AT SOME POINT TODAY.

I will walk within my house in the integrity of my heart. ~Psalm 101:2

Day 35 - Love is Accountable

Plans fail for lack of counsel, but with many advisers they succeed. ~Proverbs 15:22

A couple that faces problems alone is more likely to fall apart during tough times. However, the ones who interlock their lives in a network of other strong marriages radically increase their chances of surviving the fiercest of storms. It is crucial that a husband and wife pursue godly advice, healthy friendships and experienced mentors.

The way of a fool is right in his own eyes, but a wise man is he who listens to counsel. ~Proverbs 12:15

Encourage one another day after day ...so that none of you will be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin ~Hebrews 3:13

Each one of us will give an account of himself to God. ~Romans 14:12

This appointment is unbreakable. And though we're all ultimately responsible for the way we approach it, we can surely stand as much help as others can give.

TODAY'S DARE
FIND A MARRIAGE MENTOR-SOMEONE WHO IS A STRONG CHRISTIAN AND WHO WILL BE HONEST AND LOVING WITH YOU. IF YOU FEEL THAT COUNSELING IS NEEDED, THEN TAKE THE FIRST STEP TO SET UP AN APPOINTMENT. DURING THIS PROCESS, ASK GOD TO DIRECT YOUR DECISIONS AND DISCERNMENT.

In abundance of counselors there is victory. ~Proverbs 11:14

Here's my question for today's blog:
How does a couple "find" a mentor couple? The obvious answer is prayer. But after that...what? "Hi. You don't really know us but will you mentor us?" ??????

I NEED STRUCTURE!!!

I do not function well without structure. So, schedules are like a comfortable, fluffy robe on a cold day to me. When JC has a long "vacation" period (Spring Break, Summer Vacation, "Winter" Break), it messes with me pretty bad. I do not function well without structure.

But, this morning we got up and read our devotions together and exercised. It was nice. JC went to work, Brendan had his co-op classes, our day progressed, we had a nice dinner together. Ahhh...I feel better already.

I did have a little fright about 3 p.m. today. My computer crashed and then wouldn't come back up. As soon as JC was out of class, I called to ask his assistance. He kindly told me that our hard drive might have crashed...like...died. AAAARRRRGGGGHHHH!!!! I have never made a back up of My Documents!!!

Fortunately, my husband ROCKS! and he got my computer back up tonight. So, I am currently backing up all 15 GB of My Documents. Gosh, that's a lot of stuff!

And so, Amanda (thank you for asking! ☺), here I am, back on The Love Dare!

Day 31 - Love and Marriage (read 12/27/08)

A man shall leave his father and his mother, and be joined to his wife; and they shall become one flesh. ~Genesis 2:24

"Leaving" means that you are breaking a natural tie. Your parents step into the roll of counselors to be respected but can no longer tell you what to do.

The purpose of "leaving", of course, is not to abandon all contact with the past but rather to preserve the unique oneness that marriage is designed to capture.

"Cleaving" - clinging to them as your new rock of refuge and safety. This man is now the spiritual leader of your new home, tasked with the responsibility of loving you "just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself up for her" (Ephesians 5:25). This woman is now one in union with you, called to "see to it that she respects her husband" (Ephesians 5:33).

With this process you are now free to become "one flesh".

To achieve oneness in your:
-decision making
-priorities
-sexual affections

TODAY'S DARE

IS THERE A "LEAVING" ISSUE YOU HAVEN'T BEEN BRAVE ENOUGH TO CONQUER YET? CONFESS IT TO YOUR SPOUSE TODAY, AND RESOLVE TO MAKE IT RIGHT. THE ONENESS OF YOUR MARRIAGE IS DEPENDENT UPON IT. FOLLOW THIS WITH A COMMITMENT TO YOUR SPOUSE AND TO GOD TO MAKE YOUR MARRIAGE THE TOP PRIORITY OVER EVERY OTHER HUMAN RELATIONSHIP.

May they all be one, as You, Father, are in Me and I am in You. ~John 17:21

Day 32 - Love Meets Sexual Needs (read 12/28/08)

The husband must fulfill his duty to his wife, and likewise also the wife to her husband. ~1 Corinthians 7:3

How beautiful and how delightful you are, my love. ~Song of Solomon 7:6

To keep my blog somewhat PG, you'll have to get the book to read more on this Dare!!!

and finally, today's Dare:

Day 33 - Love Completes Each Other

If two lie down together they keep warm, but how can one be warm alone? ~Ecclesiastes 4:11

God originated the human race with a male and a female - two similar but complementary designs meant to function in harmony.

Two are better than one because they have a good return for their labor. For if either of them falls, the one will lift up his companion. But woe to the one who falls when there is not another to lift him up. ~Ecclesiastes 4:9, 10

Although our differences can frequently be the source of misunderstanding and conflict, they have been created by God and can be ongoing blessings if we respect them.

TODAY'S DARE

RECOGNIZE THAT YOUR SPOUSE IS INTEGRAL TO YOUR FUTURE SUCCESS. LET THEM KNOW TODAY THAT YOU DESIRE TO INCLUDE THEM IN YOUR UPCOMING DECISIONS, AND THAT YOU NEED THEIR PERSPECTIVE AND COUNSEL. IF YOU HAVE IGNORED THEIR INPUT IN THE PAST, ADMIT YOUR OVERSIGHT AND ASK THEM TO FORGIVE YOU.

Put on love, which is the perfect bond of unity. ~Colossians 3:14

Cell Phone Cameras

It's a good idea, really.

Except that the cord to connect my phone to the computer costs something like $70. That's ridiculous! So, I don't have one.

But that means my pictures don't get transferred very often.

In fact, when JC & I used blue tooth to transfer them to his phone so he can transfer them to his computer and then finally to mine (which we did today), I find pictures from when Cameron was STILL CRAWLING!

Man, that was some time ago!!! Just thought I'd share some good times with you!

Things we accomplished in 2008
Joined The Bridge
Found a great Sunday school class
Began homeschooling
Joined My Help homeschool group
Started this blog
JC survived his first year teaching
