Our Conversations with God

It was decided. Yep, we're going to do this. JC was going under the knife. These two that we have, they're enough. Yep, we're good. Got the money, found the doctor. Let's do it.

But, then we hear:

God blessed them and said to them, "Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air and over every living creature that moves on the ground." Genesis 1:28

Are you talking to me? (looking around the room)

Then God blessed Noah and his sons, saying to them, "Be fruitful and increase in number and fill the earth. Genesis 9:1

Ok, God. Sure.

As for you, be fruitful and increase in number; multiply on the earth and increase upon it." Genesis 9:7

But money....time....patience....

And God said to him, "I am God Almighty; be fruitful and increase in number. A nation and a community of nations will come from you, and kings will come from your body. Genesis 35:11

Why do you keep saying these things???

The fruit of your womb will be blessed, and the crops of your land and the young of your livestock--the calves of your herds and the lambs of your flocks. Deuteronomy 28:4

But that's Old Testament.

Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever. Hebrews 13:8

Oh. Right.

All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work. 2 Timothy 3:16-17

Are you really, really telling us that we should have more? Really???

The LORD will grant you abundant prosperity--in the fruit of your womb, the young of your livestock and the crops of your ground--in the land he swore to your forefathers to give you. Deuteronomy 28:11

But why?

You weep and wail because he no longer pays attention to your offerings or accepts them with pleasure from your hands. You ask, "Why?" It is because the LORD is acting as the witness between you and the wife of your youth, because you have broken faith with her, though she is your partner, the wife of your marriage covenant. Has not [the LORD] made them one? In flesh and spirit they are his. And why one? Because he was seeking godly offspring. So guard yourself in your spirit, and do not break faith with the wife of your youth. Malachi 2:13b-15

Oh.

Sons are a heritage from the Lord, children a reward from him. Like arrows in the hands of a warrior are sons born in one's youth. Blessed is the man whose quiver is full of them. They will not be put to shame when they contend with their enemies in the gate. Psalm 127:3-5

But US?

he blessed them, and their numbers greatly increased, and he did not let their herds diminish. Then their numbers decreased, and they were humbled by oppression, calamity and sorrow; he who pours contempt on nobles made them wander in a trackless waste. But he lifted the needy out of their affliction and increased their families like flocks. Psalm 107:38-41

Well, maybe...

Marry and have sons and daughters; find wives for your sons and give your daughters in marriage, so that they too may have sons and daughters. Increase in number there; do not decrease. Jeremiah 29:6

Okay. So, it seems God is speaking to us.

Whether you turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying, "This is the way; walk in it." Isaiah 30:21

I think we're hearing some direction...

Anyone, then, who knows the good he ought to do and doesn't do it, sins. James 4:17
